Emerald Ball Raises Over £228,000!

15 May 2009

As part of Harrods magical Christmas celebrations, the Knightsbridge store paid homage to the 70th anniversary of Warner Bros. classic ‘The Wizard of Oz’, with the Emerald Ball kicking off the festivities.

This once-in-a-lifetime gala evening began with a magnificent Champagne and cocktail reception, followed by a sumptuous four-course banquet. The night ended in glamorous style with a live performance by the divineSophie Ellis-Bextor, our own Dorothy for the evening,  who sang a set of her greatest hits along with her own version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow".

Through ticket sales, auction and raffle income, the Emerald Ball raised over £228,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation would like to sincerely thank Mr Mohamed Al Fayed & Harrods, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and to all the brands that donated their products and services to the evening, the Auction, the Christmas Tree Raffle and the goody bags which made the event such a success.

This year has presented the Elton John AIDS Foundation with a very full agenda of work and an environment that is even more challenging than before. People living with HIV and AIDS are more acutely threatened by poverty than ever as global investment in AIDS is increasingly threatened. The Foundation is currently working with over 120 programmes across 15 countries to support them in the fight against this epidemic, from Asia and Africa to right here in the UK.

Of highest importance is to strengthen these communities so they can survive in the future without the Foundation’s help. This work is carried out in a highly efficient way.

Every penny of your donations, ticket, raffle and auction lot sales from the Emerald Ball will go directly to the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s programme of work.

Our loyal partners and sponsors have underwritten all the event costs which allows all proceeds to go to the charity. This is just one factor that contributes to the Elton John AIDS Foundation having one of the lowest operating overheads of any charity in the world (currently under 5%).

We apologise that due to the schedule running late at the event, the raffle was not drawn on stage at 10:30pm.   The raffle was drawn before 3 witnesses and winners are in the process of being contacted.

The trees will be dispatched by Harrods week commencing 14th December 2009.
